Gasterias are native to South Africa.  They are very tough plants that can tolerate low light levels.  They usually offset readily.

 

The main problem with Gasterias is the confusion with identifying and organizing this family, mainly because there are many hybrids between species and also  hybrids with Aloes and Haworthias.  Moreover, there can be huge differences between young and adult plants.  It is sometimes impossible to tell the difference between species.
